Today, we celebrated Phoebe, the “Winter Lady of White Picket,” by breaking bread together and fellowshipping. Well, we ate cake. My son introduced me to Phoebe, and now she is part of my story and the story of White Picket. She is a little-known woman of the Bible with significant impact. We shared, learned, laughed, and lifted one another in hopes that we would each be more like Phoebe and embrace opportunities to make a difference in the lives of others.
Phoebe is mentioned once in the Bible, but we learned much about her and the importance of her help to Paul. You can read about her in Romans 16:1-2 “I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a deacon of the church in Cenchreae. I ask you to receive her in the Lord in a way worthy of his people and to give her any help she may need from you, for she has been the benefactor of many people, including me.” (NIV)
Phoebe’s photo was last week, the video is from yesterday, February 1st. After -10 degrees, Phoebe, our winter flower (hellebore or lenten rose), is resilient. She rises from the frozen ground, pushes through the snow, and seeks the sun. As we confront this week, may we be like the hellebore, push through life’s seemingly impossible complicated issues, and seek the ‘son.’
